Homeschooling curricula come in all shapes and sizes. From the Fundamentalistic, to the Ultra-Reformed. One type of curricula seems to be a shining light in all this confusion, Classical Christian Education. It alone claims to be the gold standard, benefiting as it does from thousands of years of antiquity. It is superbly rigorous academically and can boast that its particular curriculum and methodology helped form the minds of great statesmen, Fathers of the Church, and Reformers who built the Christendom in whose faded glory we bask today.
Okay… that’s the ‘Rhetoric,’ what about the reality? From what spring does this great river of Latin and Greek works flow? On what foundation does this body of works rest? Here’s a summary;
- Child abuse
- Demon worship
- Bloody war
- Original Sin/Humanism
- Welfarism/State-sanctioned theft
- Human sacrifice
- A hopeless view of time
- The inferiority of women
There is a lot of work to be done in Christian education to formulate a real, from-the-ground-up Christian curriculum. There are no shortcuts. To imagine that Classical Christian Education is the answer is to wish with all your heart that figs would grow from thorn bushes. Brothers, let us be discerning when choosing how to educate our own children, let us judge by the standard of the Law-Word of God, and let us not be man-fearers, no matter how learnéd they might seem.
